During the last decade, Panama has registered economic growth indices amongst the highest in the world, and is considered one of the most attractive destinations for foreign investment. It has maintained an average annual growth of 7.2% between 2001 and 2013. In 2014 it grew by 6.2% and in 2015 5.8%, and as of June 2016 it is showing growth of 4.2% with the expectation of closing the year with a growth of 5.9%. The perspectives for growth in the upcoming years are also based on the new opportunities for growth driven by the private sector in key areas with high potential for development, such as transport and logistics, mining, financial services, and tourism.
